How often should a small business post on social media?

By Jarrett Wuerslin, founder of Ossoro Creative

Most small businesses don't have a posting problem. They have a consistency problem. A burst of posts during a slow week, then nothing for two months, then another burst. Customers who check your page during the quiet stretch wonder if you're still open. A steady, sustainable rhythm does more than an ambitious one you can't keep up.

A realistic starting schedule

  • Instagram: a few posts a week, plus stories when something's happening day to day. Stories are low effort and keep you visible.
  • Facebook: a few times a week is plenty for most local businesses. Events, offers, and community posts do well here.
  • LinkedIn: once or twice a week if you sell to other businesses. Skip it if you don't.

You don't need to be everywhere. Pick the one or two platforms your customers actually use and do those well before adding more.

Why consistency matters more than volume

Platforms reward accounts that post regularly and get engagement, and customers notice when a page is active. Three solid posts a week, every week, beats ten posts one week and none the next. It's also far easier to sustain, which is the whole point.

What to post when you're out of ideas

  • Behind the scenes: your team, your workspace, how something gets made or done.
  • Before and after: one of the most engaging formats for almost any service business.
  • Questions you get asked: answer one common customer question per post.
  • Offers and events: give people a reason to act this week.
  • Thank-yous: shout out a customer (with permission), a partner, or your team.

Plan a month of posts in one sitting. Batching takes far less time than deciding what to post every single day.

When to hand it off

If social media keeps falling to the bottom of your list, that's normal. You're running a business. That's usually the point where handing it to someone who plans, designs, and publishes every week pays for itself in time alone. Either way, the rule is the same: show up consistently, and make it easy for customers to see you're open for business.
