Are Facebook and Instagram ads worth it for a local business?
By Jarrett Wuerslin, founder of Ossoro Creative
Facebook and Instagram ads can be one of the most cost-effective ways for a local business to reach new customers, or a fast way to burn money. The difference usually isn't the platform. It's whether the ads are set up to reach the right people, send them somewhere useful, and get measured honestly.
When Meta ads tend to work well
- You serve a defined area. Ads can be targeted to people near your business, so you're not paying to reach people who will never visit.
- Your offer is visual. Food, home services before-and-afters, salons, fitness, and retail all show well in a scrolling feed.
- You have a clear next step. A booking page, a quote form, or a special offer gives people something to act on right away.
- You can follow up quickly. Ads create inquiries; fast replies turn them into customers.
When they tend to disappoint
Ads struggle when they send people to a weak destination, like a homepage with no clear call to action, or when the budget is spread so thin that the platform never gets enough data to learn who responds. They also disappoint when nobody is answering the leads they produce. An inquiry that waits two days for a reply is often already gone.
Boosting a post vs. running a real campaign
The “Boost” button is the easiest way to spend money on Meta, and usually the least effective. A proper campaign lets you choose the goal (messages, leads, bookings, website visits), control exactly who sees it, test different images and headlines against each other, and track what each one produces.
Before you spend a dollar, decide what a good result looks like: a booked call, a form submission, a phone call. Then measure the cost of each one, not likes or reach.
How to know if your ads are working
- Track leads, not impressions. Set up conversion tracking so you can see which ads produce inquiries.
- Know your cost per lead, and what a customer is worth to you. An ad that costs more per lead but brings better customers can be the better ad.
- Give it enough time to learn. Judging a campaign after two days usually means judging noise.
- Check the follow-up, not just the ads. If leads come in but don't convert, the problem may be speed or process, not targeting.
The bottom line
For most local businesses with a clear offer and a way to respond quickly, Facebook and Instagram ads are worth testing. Start with a focused goal and a budget you're comfortable learning with, send people somewhere built to convert them, and judge the results by customers, not clicks. If you'd like help setting that up properly, that's exactly what we do.
